Refectory and School Lunches

School lunches are covered within the termly fees so that every pupils has a guaranteed accessible  healthy, nutritious meal each day. Our relaxed, self-service café style refectory offers a variety of home-cooked food, sandwiches and fruit.

Each day pupils can choose from a fresh salad bar, a choice of four hot meals (including vegetarian, dairy and gluten free dishes) or freshly made sandwiches, followed by either a hot or cold dessert, or yoghurt/ fresh fruit. Our award-winning caterers ensure that the food is fresh, healthy and well-balanced.

A typical daily menu is as follows:

  • Chunky Beef Casserole (dairy & gluten free) and Dumplings
  • Chicken Chow Mein
  • Broccoli and Cauliflower Bake (vegetarian)
  • Baked Potato with Baked Beans
  • Assorted vegetables
  • Salad Bar, including fresh lettuce, peppers, proteins (meat/fish plus mixed beans)
  • Choco-date chip sponge with chocolate custard

Themed lunches occur throughout the year, and the catering team are happy to work with teachers and pupils who create menus to accompany school activities. European Day (devised by the Modern Foreign Languages Department to promote European Languages) is a typical example of this, with dishes such as Spanish Tortilla, Swedish meatballs and Tarte au Citron on offer to the whole school.

Christmas, Easter, Halloween, Comic Relief and Children in Need, World Book Day, the Bi-Centenary of Darwin's birth - all these feature as creative dishes served up to pupils, staff and visitors!

In addition, the catering team runs an annual self-sufficiency course for Year 13 pupils, designed to make them aware of buying, storing and preparing nutritious food once the pupils are living in student accommodation.
