Scholarships

Each year a limited number of scholarships will be awarded to pupils who are capable of high levels of achievement and who will make a significant contribution to the life of the school. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit or to children who are particularly gifted in music, art or sport.

Anyone who wishes to be considered for a scholarship should complete the downloadable application form (in PDF format - approx 73kb) and return this to the school for the attention of the Registrar. This should be signed by the applicant and a parent/guardian and for the Year 12 applications be accompanied by a covering letter.

The scholarship categories are:

  • Academic scholarships
  • Sports scholarships
  • Music scholarships
  • Art scholarships

Scholarships are awarded:

  • at 8+ for entry into Year 4 (Academic)
  • at 11+ for entry into Year 7 (Academic, Music, Sport, Art)
  • at 14+ for entry into Year 10 (Academic, Music, Sport, Art) To commence September 2011
  • at 16+ for entry into the Sixth Form (Academic, Music, Sport, Art)

1. Academic Scholarships

The awards are made on the basis of performance in a competitive exam, consisting of papers in English, Mathematics and general aptitude tests. All three elements are taken into account and are given equal weighting. The continuation of an academic scholarship is dependent upon sustained effort and attainment.

In addition to the scholarship examination, which takes place usually in the January preceding September entry, a report will be requested from the Headteacher of the applicant’s current school in support of the application. Candidates successful in the examination will be required to attend an interview.

The next Academic Scholarship exams are scheduled for Saturday 23 January 2010; interviews will be held on Thursday 28 January 2010.

2. Music Scholarships

Award of these scholarships is by audition, written examination and interview in the Lent term preceding entry in September.

The next Music Scholarship exams are scheduled for Wednesday 27 January 2010

3. Sports Scholarships

Sports scholarships shall be awarded on the basis of outstanding sporting ability.

The pupil must be able to demonstrate proficiency in both traditional team games as well as individual activities.

The preferred entry requirement would be to have played sport at either District or County level. However, exceptional performance at either Preparatory or Primary School may be sufficient to qualify. On receipt of a sports scholarship there will be an expectation to attend extra-curricular activities regularly and play a leading role in the development of school sport.

The next Sports Scholarship exams are scheduled for Thursday 28 January 2010.

4. Art Scholarships

Art scholarships are awarded on the basis of outstanding artistic ability and commitment to the subject. The pupil must provide a portfolio of artwork showing her/his artistic development over a period of years, which will be shown at interview. Candidates will also be expected to spend a morning/afternoon in the Art Department when they will be asked to complete a variety of exercises. References will be requested from the current art teacher.

The next Art Scholarship exams are scheduled for Monday 25 January 2010.

General notes about the scholarships

All successful candidates will receive a fixed £100 per term discount from tuition fees and will be recognised and awarded a prize at our annual prize giving ceremony.
