Scholarships

From September 2012, the scholarship system will reward outstanding performance and will promote continued excellence - both within and outside the classroom.  However, the majority of the available funds will be allocated to the bursary system which enables pupils, who otherwise would be unable to do so, to attend the school.

All scholarships awarded will result in a fee reduction of £100 per term and will be based on academic merit or for outstanding ability in an area such as Music, Art, Drama or Sport. The number awarded and the type of award will vary from year to year in line with the strengths of the pupils.

The award of scholarships will be in accord with the following pattern:

  • No awards will be made for pupils entering Year 7 in September 2012
  • Awards will be made at the end of Year 7 and will run for four years up to the end of Year 11

The award of a scholarship will be as a result of: academic nomination from the  Head of Year 7 based on the tracker, examination results and overall performance sport, Art, Music and Drama nominations from relevant subject areas but only if they are merited on absolute rather than relative measures Senior Leadership Team approval (after consultation at Board of Studies) a commitment to continued outstanding performance

Awards for Sixth Form Scholarships will be made at the start of Year 12 and will be as a result of:

  • Outstanding GCSE results for academic scholarships
  • Outstanding performance in other designated areas throughout Years 7 – 11

Pupils selected would be expected to:

  • Show a commitment to the activity programme
  • Take a leading role in the mentoring programme

All scholarships will be reviewed annually by data and interview:

  • Outcomes will be forwarded to parents by letter
  • Scholarships may be withdrawn from pupils deemed to be under-performing

In exceptional circumstances scholarships could be awarded at the end of Year 9 to other pupils who may be new to school or late developers. This will apply to pupils currently in receipt of a scholarship which expires at the end of Year 9.

The school is keen to establish a system to include not only consistency between external and internal candidates but also an onus on the recipient to take on additional responsibilities as a scholar. In addition to that stated above:

  • Art scholars must study Art
  • Music scholars must study Music and/or play a significant role in extra-curricular Music
  • Sports scholars must play a significant role in extra-curricular Sport
  • Drama scholars must play a significant role in extra-curricular Drama
  • Scholars must contribute to the life of the school by some form of discretionary effort, eg
    • An active and/or leading role in the activity programme
    • Support for younger pupils
