Sitting an entrance exam on a fixed day with over one hundred other children can intimidate even the brightest and most confident child.
Many children do not perform at their best in formal examination situations, particularly when they are only ten or eleven years old. The ethos of Hull Collegiate School is to bring out the best in everyone and their Assessment Days are designed to eliminate pre-examination nerves.
Children who are currently undergoing the entry requirements for Year 7 are now invited into Hull Collegiate School to sit assessments in small groups. This way, the children can relax a little bit more and the admissions staff can look after each child individually and welcome them into the school. Whilst the tests themselves are formal, involving written and aural tests, the environment is intended to be as relaxed as possible.
By providing a comfortable environment in which to sit the assessments, your child will be best placed to perform at his or her best. This way, Hull Collegiate School is able to assess your child's true potential. Once at Hull Collegiate School, the personalised tracking system ensures that each child is not only working constantly towards his or her individual level, but is always aiming and achieving higher.
A recent education report recommended that children should not start formal education until the age of six and Mr Rob Haworth, Headmaster of Hull Collegiate School, says that over-testing children at a young age can actually be detrimental to their learning process.
“We focus on educating the child as a whole, rather than training them to pass tests,” Mr Haworth said. “Being coached to pass examinations, at whatever level, is like being trained to jump over hurdles rather than being educated to know and to understand more and more in order to meet with success. Our teachers guide our pupils through the whole process so that they are ready for the next challenges and hurdles in life, either at university or in employment. The success of our former pupils at university and beyond bears testament to this since our pupils leave Hull Collegiate School as energetic, inquisitive, hard-working and considerate young men and women.”
Entrance assessments can be undertaken on a variety of dates throughout January and February.
For further details about the assessments, to register your child and to book your assessment day, please contact The Registrar, Mrs Sharon McEwan, on 01482 657016 or by email: enquiries.hull@church-schools.com . She is always happy to arrange personal tours of the school.
"I applaud the decision to award places to pupils based on observation and assessment. I would imagine that it would be a far more accurate predictor of senior school suitability than one morning's testing, with all the stress that tests entail."
