Two certificates are available at Level 2 - GCSE level - in this subject.
One certificate, Latin Language, deals exclusively with the Latin language and takes pupils up to a standard of Latin which is the normal standard of GCSE.
The other certificate, Latin Language and Roman Civilisation, should appeal to those pupils who have less confidence in Latin but are interested in aspects of Roman life; the level of Latin required for this certificate is significantly lower than it is for the Latin language certificate; extra work is instead done on aspects of Roman life – in some years this might include study of gladiatorial games, chariot-racing and baths; in other years it might include the topics of theatre, houses and slaves.
We continue to use the Cambridge Latin Course in order to increase knowledge of the language, finishing book III.
At this point those pupils doing Latin Language and Roman Civilisation have almost completed their study of the language; they will continue their work by practising translation of the language; they will also be studying civilisation topics throughout the year.
Pupils doing the certificate in Latin Language will work on further aspects of the language, using book IV of the Cambridge Latin Course.
Those pupils doing Latin Language and Roman Civilisation will continue to practise the language and to work on aspects of Roman civilisation.
Pupils doing the certificate in Latin Language will continue with their study of the language, eventually working on book V of the Cambridge Latin Course.
The course covers the Latin language and the Roman way of life. There is something for everyone and committed pupils can both enjoy and succeed in this subject.
