Computers for Teenage Cancer Ward

Over £7,000 has been raised by pupils in the Senior School to support teenagers with cancer. Part of the funds have been used to buy 5 computers for the Teenage Cancer Unit at St James' Hospital, Leeds.

The pupils organised the fundraising through the Lauren's Fund Committee, which was set up in memory of Year 9 pupil, Lauren Young, who died of cancer last November. The pupils have held many events during the year which included a Christmas Fair, a Hull Collegiate School version of "Race for Life" which included boys as well as girls, a special entry fee  to the annual House Christmas Pantomime, charity wrist bands and a Summer Fair.

Three pupils visited St James' Hospital on Friday 13 November to hand over the computers to the Teenage Cancer Unit. Cat Austin, the Activities Co-ordinator for the Ward accepted the computers from Year 13 pupil, Callum Innes, who represented the Lauren's Fund Committee, and Naomi Riby and Emily Wright, class-mates of Lauren.

"We have funded 5 computers so that teenagers can access their computer from the parts of the hospital where they receive their different treatments," says Callum. "This has topped up the current number of computers on the ward so there is now one computer per child, plus a spare one. We would like to thank everyone who has helped with this, from Mrs Feszczak and Miss Davis, to everyone on the Committe as well as everyone in school who has taken part in the fundraising events and generously donated money."

The remainder of the monies raised has been put towards providing a team shelter on the astroturf as a lasting memory to Lauren who was an exceptionally keen young sportswoman.
