A team of four pupils from Years 7 and 8 competed at the recent Salters Chemistry Festival at the University of York where they were placed second in the afternoon event. Congratulations to our young chemists: James Whitbread, Daniel Walker, Abigail Worrall and Elinor Thorp.
The day consisted of two practical challenges; one set by the Salters Institute and one by York University. The Hull Collegiate School team came second in the afternoon challenge which involved making coloured paints from chemicals. The day ended with a lecture about ‘Colourful Chemistry’ which included many demonstrations, the highlight of which was a homemade firework!
Sixth Form Chemists competed against local schools at Hull University in the Royal Society of Chemistry Young Analyst Competition. This is a demanding three hour practical challenge for a team of three: David Cuthbertson, Joshua Briggs and Puja Gopal. The pupils did very well to come to a correct conclusion from the analytical tasks they performed.
Two year 10 pupils who are considering careers in Chemistry have been awarded places on Salters Chemistry Camps this year. Phillipa Jolly and Sarah Hess will spend a residential week at York University working in the labs within a group of fifty pupils from around the UK. The week involves practical work, visits to local industry and evening activities.
