Young scientists win Royal Society of Chemistry national competition

The Royal Society of Chemistry “Top of the Bench” competition was held at the University of Hull last night and our four-strong team from Years 9-11 shone through to win the regional heat.

Mubin Khan, Jack Kelsall, Emily Heaton and Jack Salt completed a written test and then conducted nine 8-minute challenges which included making a molecule, analysing the chemical make-up of household chemicals and matching chemical names to chemical symbols.

“I was thrilled to win and I am looking forward to representing the region at the National Finals next year,” said Jack Salt, who is in Year 9.

“Congratulations to our winning team,” commented Ms Willie, the school's Chemistry teacher who organised the school’s participation in the competition. “They worked very well as a team and kept their concentration going through the challenges, especially after completing a 20 minute theory test. They have done extremely well.”

Hull Collegiate School now qualifies for the National Final to be held in London in Spring 2012.
