Year 4 learn teamwork at Forest School

Teamwork in the forest is paramount in order to survive – as the Year 4 children found out at Forest School this week.

Whether they were building a shelter, devising fairground attractions or starting a fire, teamwork turned out to be the most important factor. Jonathan and Millie helped each other to cut branches off trees and they learned that they needed to cut across the tree in a straight line to prevent infection.  The trees were then used to construct a shelter which Jacob, Fraser, Henry and Guido worked together to make.

Owen and Thomas J. got busy devising a hoopla game for their fair attraction project. They worked together to forage the forest for equipment that they could use.  Thomas D. and Lucas decided to lay an adder trail through the forest. Unfortunately, all sensible adders were in hiding so no actual creatures were seen, but the boys learned to look in all likely spots and included these on their exciting trail.

Esme, Millie, Grace and both Victorias worked as a team to explore the previously undiscovered areas of the forest. They worked together to safely wade through thick mud and, when Victoria’s welly became stuck in the mud, they helped each other to dry land.

Fraser, Henry and Guido were extremely engaged in making their very own version of a zip wire. Together, they adapted a washing line and attached it to a leaning branch. They learned to include safety features such as handrails and analysed the effectiveness of their “zip wire.”

All Year 4 pupils learned that team work gets the job much more safely and effectively than working alone and they learned that they need to listen carefully to each other’s ideas and discuss them first before launching straight in.

We can’t wait to go back to Forest School in the spring.
