David Davis, the Conservative MP for Haltemprice and Howden, visited Hull Collegiate School today.

Speaking to a group of Year 8 pupils and Sixth Formers, Mr Davis participated in a Question and Answer session. The topics included tuition fees; the recent public service strike; BAE’s future; the current economic crisis; electoral reform and proportional representation; proposed constituency changes; lowering the voting age to 16, Afghanistan and Iran.

Mr Davis took part in a healthy exchange of opinions and answered all the questions frankly and with integrity.

Afterwards, Mr Davis said, “The astonishing calibre of the questions gives me great hope for the future of the country’s young people, especially if they are as bright, curious and sharp-witted as these.”

The visit was part of the school’s PHSCE curriculum. Yesterday morning the whole of Year 8 discussed:

  • Government and Parliament - what do you know?
  • How laws are made
  • The role of an MP

It concluded with the Year 12 A Level Politics pupils acting as representatives of the Green Party, UKIP, the Liberal Democrat, Labour and Conservative parties. Year 8 pupils then cast their votes and the election results were read out by Mr Davis who declared the Green Party as the landslide victor.

Government and Politics is a new  A Level offered in the Sixth Form.

Mr Monaghan, Head of History and teacher of Government and Politics said, "Politics is for pupils who like to think for themselves. Pupils who want to develop their own views, rather than accept the views of others, enjoy the subject. Today showed that we are a school that thrives on debate, discussion and argument."
