A group of Year 10 scientists visted Sheffield on Thursday 19 January to hear from some of Britain’s top scientists. Professor Steve Jones, Professor Lord Robert Winston, Professor Jim Al-Khalili, Dr Simon Singh and Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock all spoke about their research.
The pupils described the talks as ‘informative, interesting, captivating and really funny too!’
Here are a few more comments:
‘I liked Robert Winston who explained genetics as well as the ethical questions about modern techniques about IVF.’
‘Jim Al-Khalili was entertaining and very optimistic about time travel; I liked his theory of wormholes. At the end I understood not just about the possibility of future time travel but also about travelling to the past.'
‘Simon Singh was inspiring; we liked it when he electrocuted a gherkin. His lecture was very interesting and the day was the highlight of the year so far.’
Overall pupils found the day very enjoyable and the chance to be educated by such high profile scientists left many asking questions and wondering whether they might one day carry on the research to further advance scientific knowledge.
