Does this House perceive the House of Lords to be making a valuable contribution to UK politics? Pupils at Hull Collegiate School are now in an informed position to answer this question after an informative talk from a member of the House of Lords.
Pupils from Years 11 and 12 also took advantage of the opportunity to ask a member of the House of Lords intellectual and thought-provoking questions. Lord Norton of Louth explained the relevance of politics to the individual and discussed the role of the House of Lords in modern politics, encouraging pupils to engage more with the parliamentary process. A lively question and answer session followed, with the topics of the parliamentary process, and the possible reform of the House of Lords among those discussed.
Miss Sarah McDowell, Head of Sixth Form, says, “This was a fantastic opportunity for our pupils to interact with someone who knows the parliamentary system inside out. Lord Norton’s visit gave our pupils a valuable insight which will enhance their studies as well as deepening their understanding of how our country is governed.”
Mr Mike Monaghan, Head of History and teacher of Government and Politics said, “The day was not only extremely valuable for all pupils to gain an understanding but particularly useful for A level Politics pupils who had many of their questions answered by one of the UK’s leading experts in constitutional affairs.”
Year 11 pupil, Nish Kapur, aged 15, said, “I enjoyed Lord Norton’s talk as I found out much more information, particularly about the scrutiny surrounding the appointment of new members of the House of Lords. The talk has given me a more detailed idea of the importance and contribution of the House of Lords to UK politics.”
