Old Collegians' News

Old Collegians rugby match - December 2011

A big thank you should go to all the Old Collegians, captained by last year’s 1st XV captain – Anthony Duodu - who made the time to play in the annual fixture against the current 1st XV. It was a great match played in a brilliant spirit which saw the current 1st XV, captained by Rory Hunt, win 24-5

Football Tour 2011

The inaugural Old Collegians Football Tour took place over the August Bank Holiday weekend 2011.

Thirteen intrepid Old Collegians flew to Prague to play against local opposition.

The first match, played on an enormous grass pitch against Kosire, was both enjoyable and frustrating. We took to the field in shirts resembling the old Grammar School kit – black and red halves – but adorning the Hull Collegiate badge – embroidered courtesy of sponsorship from the Old Collegians’ Association. Having gone 2-0 up with goals from Nick Edwards and an own goal we conceded on 30 minutes, coinciding with the onset of torrential rain; 2-1 up at half time, the 10 minute break left us sopping wet and cold and the next 20 minutes was not our finest, conceding 2 goals to a much hungrier opposition.  Losing was not an option and for the last 20 minutes we put their goal under siege and met our just rewards with a beautifully worked equaliser from David Peel after some outstanding interchanges in midfield with Leigh Haworth. We should have won…but such is life.

The second match, against Stresovice (interestingly, the same club that had hosted the school’s 1st XI when on tour in 2009) was won 3-0 and the Old Collegians played some scintillating stuff – 3-0 up at half time with goals from Nick Edwards and Max Bayston (2) and in the second half we hit the woodwork twice – one an absolute pile driver from Nick, the other an outrageously athletic volley from Leigh 30 yards out – and Jonny Crumpton missed a sitter: the goalkeeper was not present when he gently measured his shot wide of the post. A brilliant tour – thanks to Nick Edwards – and some quality football.

We’re already planning for next year at the same time so if you fancy joining us, please contact Rob Haworth at the school in the first instance.
