Aims
Our aims in Maths are simple. We want our pupils to:
Key Stage3
In Year 7 pupils will revise and develop basic number work (4 rules, decimals, fractions), patterns and shape. A study of Algebra and Probability will be initiated and our approach generally will be to instigate, investigate and solve problems. By October half-term, pupils will be set into three abilitly based groups.
In Year 8 the pupils will be in sets according to their ability; the top set(s) will use material designed to stretch and challenge the more able as well as introduce new topics in language appropriate to their age.
In Year 9 such topics as Trigonometry and Simultaneous Equations are introduced.
Regular Maths homework is set and pupils will complete some assignments using MyMaths on line.
GCSE
All pupils will take GCSE Maths and each will be entered for either the Foundation or Higher tier. When appropriate the top set will study additional material which will lead to a combination of qualifications suited to their talents. In the past this has led to one or more of the following: GCSE Maths at the end of Year 10, a course in Additional Mathematics, IGCSE and GCSE Statistics.
AS and A Level
Pupils have the option to continue with their mathematical studies into the Sixth Form at AS level and A level. The faculty offers both Mathematics and Further Mathematics and follows the MEI modular course.
Facilities
The Maths Faculty have their own dedicated suite of classrooms which are equipped with Promethean interactive whiteboards and the associated software [eg Activexpression and Activinspire].
Extra-curricular
Each year pupils take part in the Junior, Intermediate and Senior Maths Olympiads which are run by UKMT. In Years 7 to 9 we send a representative team to the UKMT Team Challenge and pupils from across the upper years are entered for a competition at Sheffield Hallam University. Lunchtime Maths Clubs and Clinics and extra revision classes are also open to our pupils.
