Aims
Our aim in Business Studies is to give pupils a thorough understanding of how businesses operate, from micro businesses to multinationals, and how they are affected by the environment in which they operate by considering, for example, how they react to their competitors' actions.
Our aim in Economics is to give pupils a thorough understanding of the economy, both at the micro level (by, for example, investigating the housing market) and at the macro level (by investigating economic indicators such as economic growth, inflation, employment and the balance of payments).
AS and A Level
Business Studies and Economics are taught in the Sixth Form as two separate subjects. Both subjects are popular which enables valuable classroom discussion. Our results over the years have been very healthy and many pupils go on to study courses at university which comprise some element of Business Studies or Economics. Both subjects combine well with other subjects taught at Hull Collegiate School.
Extra-curricular
The Department offers Young Enterprise as an extra-curricular activity for Year 10s who want to set up and run their own businesses. We have also introduced a short course in GCSE Business Studies as a lunchtime activity. We run a Year 12 Business Studies and Economics trip, which involves an overnight stay in London. We have visited The Tower of London for a talk on marketing, the Bank of England where we discussed quantitative easing, the London Metal Exchange to see demand and supply in action and Wembley Stadium to learn how the venue is run as a business. We also invite outside speakers in to speak to our pupils where appropriate.
Facilities
Our facilities are excellent and both teaching rooms are equipped with interactive whiteboards. We follow the AQA course in both subjects using the Nelson Thornes textbooks which are specifically written for the exam and also subscribe to Kerboodle, the accompanying interactive learning site.
