Hull Collegiate Preparatory School is a thriving school on the outskirts of Hull. We pride ourselves on offering excellent, creative and innovative teaching and the highest quality learning opportunities for pupils. The development of a pupil’s character is as important to us as our commitment to academic breadth and challenge. Pupils leave our school with the confidence to serve as self-assured, successful members of the community.
The Prep School is committed to providing the type of education which we believe every child deserves. We ensure that the curriculum is broad and balanced for all ages and we offer a wide variety of subject-specialist teaching in: Modern Foreign Languages, Science, P.E., Games, Music, Art and DT. Lessons are delivered in specialist areas using both the Prep School and Senior School facilities as the children progress through the school. We run over 33 extra-curricular activities in school each week, including judo, golf, Mandarin, fife, chess, football, Maths, Science, country dancing, cricket, sewing, Rubiks Cube and Drama. These lead to a rich educational offering for all of our pupils from Reception to Year 6.
We ensure our children are prepared for future exams, whilst trying to avoid being slaves to any exam process, whether we are thinking about assessments on entry in Reception or KS1 and KS2 SATs. Our job, firstly, is to educate children to the highest standards, to ensure children acquire the skills necessary for the 21st century, and to instil a life-long love of learning. As a consequence, they will naturally be prepared for exams in the best possible way, will achieve their potential and ultimately be successful. Whilst, our children DO NOT formally sit the national tests in KS2 (from 2016/17), we do use tests from previous years to feed into our full assessment cycle both formatively and summatively.
At Hull Collegiate Prep School we embed a love of learning and develop a sense of enquiry that leads to a growth in knowledge and understanding. We teach that the process of learning is key and not just the arrival at a successful answer. We teach our children that their brain must be trained and that children should feel smart when they are working hard; creatively, academically, scientifically, individually or collectively. Educated pupils believe that the input of hard work and effort leads to learning and achievement, and that they should consolidate their efforts following a setback. They try harder because of the association between effort and success. In school we praise children for their effort. We encourage the sharing of experiences where hard work has ‘paid off’. Education is not about protecting children from failure, it is about challenging them to persevere through challenges.
